I'll just explain HOW I purchase rods. First, I have to have a REASON for a new rod. Then I go into a store I TRUST and tell them what application(s) I want the rod for. Then I give them the maximum I am willing to pay. Then I test cast and inspect their recommendations. Then I choose the one that feels the best to me.

FYI, the max I'll spend is usually in the $200-300 range including reel, backing, line, and tube. I'll spend top dollar for a quality fly line and put it on an "economy" rod and reel before I put a bargain line on a $300 rod.
