Default Ancor trolley system for Kayak?

I've decided to try and make my kayak work somehow. My next question should I rig a ancor trolley system or just install a deck loop and run it down by the bow? I'm going to call kayak fishing stuff and make an order I just need to know if I should the ancor trolley system. I have a small 9'5" sit in kayak with not much room on deck. I'm also see if they have a lumber seat cushion for the back.

I only anchor mine from the front. I have a jam cleat near the "cockpit" (its a SOT), and a loop at the bow - run the line through the loop and to the cleat.

There are times that i'd like to have it in the rear, but fishing mostly moving waters, I like to have it in the front where I can keep an eye on it. Moving water and anchored kayaks can be dangerous.

I have a sep anchor off the extreme front and rear of the yak with two ropes running to the seat area. See pic posted in last edition of this topic. And>>

A trolley will let you move the anchor to whatever end point you chose at the front and rear of the yak with one anchor. Most of the ones I have seen don't go to the extreme front and rear but are situated 1 to 2 ft from each end.

this link will take you to Joe hyde's article which may be helpful:

Depending on the waters you fish most regularly, you may want a system that allows both an anchor and a drag. Since I usually fish relatively still waters, I have found that a two foot piece of heavy chain anchors me just fine. To provide flexibility, I cut the chain into two pieces, one six inches long (it is a heavy duty chain) and the other 18 inches long, I have these two sections clipped together with a heavy duty carabine. When I want to anchor, I use the whole length of chain, when I just want to slow my drift in a stiff breeze, I unclip the 18 inche piece of chain and use only the six inch piece as a drag and it works great. However you rig your anchor system, I would recommend that you use floating nylon rope. That way, if you need to cut your anchor line in an emergency, you can recover your anchor. Just a thought...

I posted a link to an anchor trolley system on the other thread. It shows the trolley running to the stern (where I have mine), but you could just as easily run it to the the bow. For convenience, here's the link:

If you use it as a drag and it's off to the one side, won't it pull the yak to the one side?

yep, that is why I put them at the EXTREME ends of the yak.. if you are going to use it as a drag anchor that makes the most sense and give better stability.

read Joe Hyde's article ( FAOL cites above) and think about whether you are ever going to do a stream where the drag anchor might be of use to you. If you will always be in a lake or pond , a trolley set-up stationed NEAR the extreme ends will be fine.

I use two carabiners, one attched to each handle at the end of my kayak. Between them os a clothsline arrangement with a third carabiner. This third one is attached to the clothsline so I can move it to the front, rear or middle and it is where the anchor line passes through. Finally I have a cam cleat that the anchor line runs through and us used to hold the end of the line. Do not tie it down in any water with any speed at all. You do not want to get swamped and this can happen easily if you are not careful. That is why the cam cleat is so much safer.

I made a simple trolley just using a couple eye bolts and some rope with a bowline tied in it. I have a clip on my anchor line that I can easily slide for depth and just clip it to the bowline. For an anchor I have a little 3 lb rubber coated dumbell that I picked up for 3 bucks. My whole anchor system including th anchor was less than ten bucks. I don't trust those claw type anchors in a kayak because I am usually anchored in current and want my anchor to give before the boat swamps. I was surprised how well my little three pound anchor held in heavy current.
