    Default smallie sink tip

I'm looking to get a sink tip for fishing smallies. The water I normally fish is fairly big with a decent flow (upper mississippi). Asy suggestions? I know Teeny makes a couple different types; one being their mini-tip (5' tip 3.75-5.75"/sec), the other being their chuck and duck line (8' tip and either 9"/sec or 12"/sec). Does anyone have any experience with either of these line or any others by chance?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

I don't have any experience with the two lines you mentioned. I have been fishing Cabela's Prestige Plus Type IV sink tip on my 6wt for smallies. It is a 10' sink tip and is rated 3 3/4" to 5 1/4" per sec sink rate.

I have used the Teeny lines quite a bit. I have the mini-tip, and the T-200 through T-500, and the chuck-and-duck, plus the longshot.

What line you use is very dependant on the water you will fish. You can compensate some, but you need to get it right (in the ballpark).

What weight rod will you use? How deep to you want to fish?

The mini-tip is excellent for general use. The T-300 is probably the most useful, if the water is at least 4 feet deep. If you can describe what you think you will be fishing, I could make a suggestion (depth and current).

These take a little time to learn how to cast.

It's fairly big water that I'm fishing, the upper Mississippi. Not very deep (4-8') but a substantial flow rate. 4000-10000 cuft/sec.
I'll be using both my 7wt as well as my 8wt.

I fish the upper Mississippi on occassion. The stretch I fish varies in depth from very shallow (1-2 feet) to fairly deep holes (12 feet or more). Floating line works pretty well but I have used a full sinking sink (Sci.Anglers Uniform Density type V) with some success. A Rio versi tip line would be ideal but a bit expensive. If you want an intergrated shooting head like a teeny line, I would go with a 200 grain for an 8wt. line. If you are fishing from a boat, the full sinking line works great. It is not very good for wading. Wading calls for the sink tip or integrated shooting head lines. After all of that rambling,I think the Rio versi-tip would be the best bet for the upper Mississippi.

For those kind of flows, I would guess a T-300 or T-400. The mini tip will not get down in those kind of flows, and the T-200 will be a little light. I would get the T-300, which would give the most flexibility. You can fish an un-weighted or weighted fly if you need to fish a little more up or down.

These have 24 foot tips, and cast a mile. You have the transition point just at the rod tip. I cast them upstream, and then do a big mend, and just follow the line with the rod tip. These will work fine with the 7 or 8 weight. A T-400 probably would be too heavy for a 7 weight. Use a short leader, like 3 feet.

    I hope this helps.
