    Default Tippet/Leader

Well... going out for a weekend of pond fishing... and I can't seem to find my lightweight leaders/tippet and such... would it be ok to use straight 4lb test for crappie/gills and 8 or 10lb test for bass?

I have never tried the 4lb for panfish but all I use is about 4' of 8lb for bass. They don't seem to care much until it's to late.

That's all I use for sub surface fishing. 4# Vanish for bluegill and crappie and 8# for bass. Although if your fishing for bass in cover, you might want to go with 10#.

If I'm top water fishing then I will use a tapered leader or straight piece of mono. 8' ought to be about right.

I use the L2L and then tie on about 18 to 24 inches of 4 lb mono. for my pond bream fishing. It even serves well for the smaller bass in the 1 to 2 lb class.

    Colt45,

You can go by what works for you on this one. If your casting style is such that the leader (Stren, Trilene, etc.) straightens out and turns over your fly, you've got it made in the shade. If it lands in a pile of leader material, back to the drawing board. BTW, I wouldn't go any lighter that 8lb test since it's hard to tell when the bass are going to make an appearance. 8T

Yeah, it'll work. Not the best, but it will do. Go have fun.
