Thread: Bass tournament

1. #1

Default Bass tournament

I entered into a bass tournament the Saturday before last. It was a kayaking only, catch-bass-any-way-you-can setup, on Pawtuckaway Lake, a popular public waterway. The only regulation was no live bait, which is illegal in any kind of tournament in New Hampshire. Out of the 30 people doing it, I was the only one fly fishing. It started at 6 am and went till 2:30 pm, on a 90 degree day. It was a lot of fun, even though it was hot. The best part was when I caught this 2.14 pound largemouth. It was the 3rd largest and got me 4th place. Here's a link to the picture that the guy running the weigh-in boat took: http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=67529&sort=1&thecat=500&passwo rd=[/url:49511]
I didn't win anything (missed 3rd place by 2 oz.) because 1st place was for the largest bass, 2nd was for the three largest combined bass, and 3rd was for the second largest bass. I may not have got any prizes, but I had three or four people come up to me afterwards, asking about how to fly fish. The guy running the tournament said that perhaps next year he might have a fly fishing only prize, so I plan on trying again next year.

I've got a similar story. I entered a tournament, salt water, for the first time in back in May. A bit bigger that the one you were in about 500 people. I did see other people fly fishing but I'm not sure if they were in the tourney. Ended up catching a 1.95 lb bluefish which I weighed in. When the tournament ended at 3 p.m., I had weighed in the only fish in the fly fishing division. So I ended up winning the division. I made out a bit better in the prize category collecting about $200 worth of prizes. I had a blast and I'm definitely doing it again next year.

Congratulations on a good showing!

That's an interesting format for a tournament. I'd like to see more like that.

Here's another picture of a bass I caught the morning before the tournament, on the same lake: http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=67518&sort=1&thecat=500&passwo rd=[/url:701bb]

I have got a question for you. Was it catch and kill or release. I have a hard time seeing a livewell fit into my kayak and have also had a few fish die on me that were kept on a stringer. I have always been hesitant to sign up for tournaments because of the fish storage issue because I hate to see a good bass die from poor storage.

It was catch-and-release only. The bass had to be alive to be weighed in. When you signed up for the tournament, you got a floating live well to keep the bass in. Here's a pic: http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=67531&sort=1&thecat=500&passwo rd=[/url:ac6a0]
You tie the rope to the back of your kayak, and when you got a bass you just tossed it overboard, and put your fish in. The bass could swim around, but the net kept it from getting out. It worked great, and I got to keep mine, so I plan on useing it a lot.

Here's a pic of the fly I caught the bass on: http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=67532&sort=1&thecat=500&passwo rd=[/url:ac6a0]

Hy sculp thanks for the reply on the movable live net. I can't view the pics though. I think that you have it set up so that only MSN users can see your pics. When I click it sends me to a screen that requires an email and password to log in.

I can picture the image of what it looks like in my head though.
