I too own a 1994 Mercury Tracer. I carried my River Tamer pontoon disassebled in three pieces inside the car. The the 7' oars break-down in half. No problem.

"I never string up a trout rod without wild anticipation. Often, I've
been exhausted on trout streams, uncomfortable, wet, cold, briar-scarred,
sunburned, mosquito-bitten, but never, with a fly rod in my hand, have I been unhappy." Charles Kuralt

Hey! Don't be bashful about tying your craft to the top of your car. We float stock some of our streams here. We left the barrels, three specially modified 55 gal plastic drums about 10 miles from the storage facility one year. I tied two of them to the top of my Geo Metro, Then decided to tie the third between and ontop of the other two. They are bright international orange and looked kinda un-kool up there but I was able to transport them up the interstate to the storage spot with no trouble at all. I don't think you'll have any trouble!

FYI
Saw at Wal-Mart the other day a double action hand pump for pennies less than $10....seems like a good price.
Ever seen one of these? [url=http://www.waterstrider.com:01372]www.waterstrider.com[/url:01372] They fit in a duffel bag with everything you need (oars, pump etc) and apparently take only about 10 minutes to set up. I've seen their DVD and the boats look very good.
I saw a bunch of these Waterstriders (or look-alikes) on the Salmon River in NY a few years ago. They seemed to handle the white water just fine.
