Default Boat fishing fly box organization

I recently expanded my fly box addiction. I added a blue system x for my bluegill flies, a green system x for carp flies, a big cliff for terrestrials, and a bugger barn for all my smallie and trout streamers.

This is where it gets tricky. For the past 5 years I have owned a boat, motor and trailer that I could not use. The trailer fell apart. The mounts that held the frame to the part that held the boat were made of rubber and had rotted away. I searched for someway to fix these mounts for 5 years, all the while going without a boat and having to wade the shore for my gill and bass fishing. I had a float tube for a while but did not care for fishing in it.

Well friday I finally found the mount. The old mount had a part number on it and the name of the manufacturer. You have to understand, this prt is probably 40 years old. It is an old old elgin trailer. Anyway, the company that made it is still in business. I called them and they were able to set me up with the new part number. They are on their way to me as we speak.

Now, I made all these fly box purchases last week and the week before not knowing that this season I would have a boat to use instead of wading. So I am wondering , since I will wear one of those inflatable life jackets, and do not want a fly vest or chest pack in the boat, what to do. I dont necessarily want my fly boxes flopping around in the boat.

Should I look into one of those ocean fly boxes for all my warmwater flies? Such as this one? That option still leaves me up in the air for what to do with my tippet, spare spools etc.
Maybe a tackle bag, like bass fishers use? Hell maybe a regular tackle box or something?

How about it boat fisherman? What do you use?

I use an Okuma tackle backpack, but I can't find reference to them on Google so I guess they're discontinued. I love mine, it serves me well on the boat and on walk-ins to a pond or remote location.

Cabelas, Orvis and BassPro carry similar items.

I've got an Abel bag. I really like it even though it's way too expensive. If you don't mind the "sticker shock", I haven't seen a fly bag that's better thought out or better made. If you don't like the price, look at the Wal Mart bags like the Plano bags the bass fishermen use with interchangeable plastic boxes. The plastic boxes work fine for larger bass, striper, muskie type flies and you can take the boxes you need and leave the others at home.

If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you like your float tube? I love mine and prefer it to my bass boat unless I'm fishing big water and have to run a long ways.

The fly shop I frequent sometime buys lots from estates. There was a Plano box in one lot that I picked for $20, which included the box and whatever was in it. Turned out to be a real good deal. I use this when I'm fishing from a boat. It has a storage area on top which will hold 3 to 4 medium fly boxes, the size of video cassette storage boxes, tippet spools, reels, spare spools etc. Below in a separate area is storage for 3 large boxes. It'll hold every thing I need for a boat trip.

the reason I didnt like the float tube was that the lakes I needed it for get pretty weedy. I couldnt move at all through all the weeds. Not very convenient.

Plus being in a float tube on a lake with jet skis and ski boats and the occasional drunken speed boat was also a little unnerving.

Cabelas sells a bag that is great for boat fishing. It's their own label and goes for around $15. It has 2 decent sized side pockets that will each hold 1 large size fly box, the 2 end pockets are great for holding extra spools etc, and the main compartment can swallow several of the medium sized boxes as well as some other stuff. The overall size is a meager 16" x 8" (approx)

Almost forgot, the flap for the main compartment has a mesh pocket for holding tippet.

In my boat, I'm not worried about carrying the fly box so the size of the box isn't an issue. I just use one of the Plano 3700 style lure boxes. It is just a standard lure box for the casting crowd. You can get them at Walmart for a couple of bucks and you can put a lot of flies on one of those things. I just leave my tippets, etc. in my fannie pack, but I don't wear it while I'm in the boat.

I fish out of a boat and wade. So I like something easy to carry anywhere. For years I had a small pouch with room for flies, pliers and a few other things. Well this broke. When I went to replace it everybody wanted to sell me a system with a billion compartments and charge me a house payment.

I went to Wal-Mart and found a FLW Bass fishing bag with three plastic compartments, two side pockets and all for $10-15.

This is what I use now. Will probably last 10 years.

Hello Riderbos! Is it spring up there yet? Have really enjoyed the magazines.

What I use - as I fish from pram, Hobie Cat, and also wade. I have a "soft side tacklebox" that I think was made by Cabelas. It is listed to hold 6-3600 plastic boxes, I think. Have had it for YEARS. I have [I think} 6 or 7 fly boxes in it, my "tools", leaders, tippets, water thermoter [sp?], "wading" raincoat, fly reels, vest, 1/2 roll of "necessary paper" in zip lock bag, couple of power bars, and sometimes a bottle of water. The whole thing lives in the corner of the kitchen in the summer and the complete bag goes in the pram, and what I need is loaded in either SOSpenders for the Hobie Cat or vest for wading on each trip from the car. I've tried to keep seperate packages for each of my "systems" but I always seemed to leave something necessary in the "other pack".

It does take just a few minutes more when I use the Hobie or wade to get going when I get there, but I have everything I'll need on each trip.

I found the perfect bag today at Kohls, ten bucks on sale.
It features mesh pockets inside with zippers for tippet material etc. And one big pocket for flyboxes. One of the pictures has two system x boxes, a bugger barn, and a big cliff box, and their is room in it for two or three waterproof cf boxes yet.
