Is there a difference between Rainy's foam and soft "flip-flop" foam?
    Swamp Rat,

    Not according to Richard.

True, any foam will work when it is cut in that shape.
Closed cell foam like flip flops should work fine but I would stay away from the open cell foam that's water absorbent unless you want a subsurface fly.

    Hello Robert,

True. Any closed cell foam cut to that shape will work. The XL Rainy's Float Foam is sufficient up to size 2.

Beyond that, I like Live Body Foam from Hunters Angling. This week I will be making a 2/0 Alien to throw with my 8 wt. Might add a size 2 Alien as a dropper .

Will use the Live Body Foam myself since I do not have access to flip-flop foam.

Any closed cell foam will work. DO NOT use open-cell foam which will absorb water.

    Enjoy the Alien.

    Cheers,
    Richard

    Hey Richard,

Wow! A 2/0 with a #2 dropper! I tied three so far in size 8 (used small 3/16" diameter foam core plugs) to try out on bream. Like I said earlier, I don't have any black cactus (ice) chenille right now so for the time being, I've just used some real fuzzy (large) black chenille until I get some . Tested them in the sink for floatability and they float and look great. Its a good looking surface cricket pattern (well, hopefully to the fish anyway) and fairly easy to tie. Thanks for sharing it.
