    Default Starting tonight!

My community ed fly tying class starts tonight. Somehow this just makes the winter go by faster. Looks like we'll have some familiar faces along with some new tyers. Question: How do you other instructors (I hesitate to call myself a teacher; I'm more of a show-er) blend the two so that you're not too "elementary" with the oldtimers but not too advanced for the beginners? Fortunately I have a great group of returnees who come more for the cammaderie than anything I can teach them, and they are so good at leaning over to help someone just starting out, so it really isn't a major issue. Yet, I'm wondering. JGW

might need to make it more of a one on one type affair than a "lecure" type class. Find out where each person is as a tier, raw, little experience, middlin', and then tailor for each.

It makes for more work but is far more satisfying for all involved.

Oh, I'm not a "lecturer." This is all hands-on. Thanks Robin. JGW

Start with something simple like a shwapf. Show the group the tying procedures then have the more advanced tiers help out the noobies thru the tie. You always learn more being the teacher than the student.

It worked out just fine. Had two returnees and expected one or two more. Also two novices and am expecting the third next week. My returnees just love getting together and tying and old flies are not an issue with them. Not a lot of expectations, which wouldn't get you far in one of my classes. It's not like my last name is Whitlock! JGW
