I( towed a 27 ft 5th wheel with a Chevy dualy crewcab 454 v8 NEVER again!!!! I could pass anything but a gas truck or station.Through the mountains we could litaraly watch the gas gauge move.A friend has a 36 ft 5th wheel now and uses a Dodge with a cummins and is in love(he's a now former chevy only man).
I worked in the casinos of Laughlin Nv. for 10 yrs and the majority of the RVs were being towed by Dodges with the Cummins Diesel. They have more experiance than I ever thought Many traveled all over the place. Many from Canada. If I had my choice today it would be Cummins and Dodge.

I would go with either a Dodge Cummins Turbo or a Ford Super Duty diesel. Put a "Six Shooter" performance package on the Ford or Dodge and it will smoke anything else on the highway. Allows you to dial the truck in for power or milage.

If you buy a truck with a deisel buy a Ford with a Navistar engine. Not a Cummins--- International Harvester (Navistar) are the best. Helped in the design before I retired----------

Just as a heads up, Ford isn't using the 7.3 Powerstrokes or NAV DT444 . They switched to a smaller displacement engine. As far as brand loyalty, the cummins are great engines, but Dodge do have weaker trans then chevy. I know the chevy 6.5L was a dog, but I have heard good things about the duramax. And with the allison transmission bolted on, it is pretty bulletproof.

Of course whatever you go with, the heavier the suspension the better. And when you go shopping, tell the sales people what you are looking for, they should let you hook up to your trailer and give it a shot up a couple of hills. Take it out on the highway and give all the trucks you are looking at a good head to head comparison.

DragonMa15 I don't know where you got your info on the Nav engine in Fords--there buying them by the thousands to instal in something. Chev are built where I live and there having problems.
Wouldn't it be better to trade the big trailer in on a 17 footer.

Royce I pull a 29ft.Mobile scout with a GMC 1/2 ton pickup 2001.The truck gets 20 to 21 mpg on the hwy. and 15 to 16 pulling the scout,It has a 5.3L motor gas.{I don't know what that is in American}My son at Bennetts camping center gave me the speck on eng.trans.and rear. I ordered it per his specks and it pulls great. You could call Jim Rist at 817 573 3665 and tell him what your problem is and see if he can help.I hope this helps. Just tell him Dad sent you.
