    Default my little man can cast a fly rod!!

    We had our annual trout derby in McKinney last Saturday. There are hundreds od children and their parents, many of whom are fishing for the first time ever. I have also made it my mission to make sure that there is as much fly fishing exposure as possible. Several casting instructors volunteer their time to give lessons to whoever walks up and asks.

    Well, this year my son Evan announced that he wanted to learn how to cast and would I teach him? I wisely passed him off to Steve Hollensed who coached him with enthusiasm and patience. Before long Evan came seeking me out across the pond to come and watch him cast. With great excitement he showed me how its done. You can't imagine how thrilling this is for me!

    Now we have to come up with a fly rod for Evan. I am still floating just a bit off the ground.

    I know exactly how you feel Robin;

    I had been teaching my little guys to cast and the first time out they both catch a 2 lb bass at the same exact time... Now that is only 1/2 the story.

    My grandson's first bass on a rod was a 2 lb large mouth. My son told me just how proud he was and that it brought back some really nice memories of us fishing. My only regret was I did not get to see it with the grandson. But his daddy was right there and so was him mommy. Fishing in this family is a past time we all enjoy.
    I asked the wife what she wanted for Valentines " I want to go fishing"

    Guys I am sorry but in my opinion I have the perfect wife.

    (I am sure yours are perfect also)

    I am going to kick out another shout that needs to be kicked out! Yesterday afternoon my good friend James Russell called me and asked Evan and I to meet him at the trout pond. When we arrived James presented Evan with a five weight bamboo rod that James had built himself and fished all over CO last summer!! Now that is selflessness and care for another!

    If you need a bamboo rod built please consider contacting James at jrussell1128@gmail.com Quite an artist and quite a great guy.

    Way cool Robin. I have been fishing for over 35 years and finally bought a bamboo blank to build a bamboo rod for myself. Your son gets one in his first year of fishing! Can I be your son too???

    Thanks dad,

    That's great Robin. It's a lot of fun to fish with your kids.

    Steve does a good job with kids. He has helped my daughter with her casting too.
