    Default Measuring fish

In reading a recent article, I noticed that the fish were variously described in inches at the smaller sizes, but in lbs at the larger sizes. I know that there is a chart that shows the approximate conversion. However, I am cuious as to whether there is some sort of convention in place that fish below a certain size are described in inches and above that size in lbs?

    Dear Kev,

I think the smaller fish are described via their length because they don't weigh much. It's more impressive to say I caught an 11 1/2 inch trout than it is to say I caught an 8 ounce trout. The bigger number is always a better descriptor.

I almost always go with length because I'm lousy at estimating weight. Knowing the length of my rod handle allows me to compare pretty acurately.

You could search the fisheries biology abstracts, but I have never heard of such a thing. A fish can be described quantitiatively in many ways, and length and weight are the two most common.

On my home waters, we often mark 'em in pounds (Catch 'n BBQ fishery for many), 'cause the length of a brookie can understate the weight.

A nice 25 inch Bull will weigh over 6 1/2 lbs in July and under 4 lbs in mid October.

C&R will almost always be in inches as there is no practical and ethical way to weigh them. We put tape on the rod mesuring from the end of the butt at 63cm so you have a pretty good gauge.
