Default Venice, FL in July

I will be in Venice, FL the first week of July and will have a couple of days where I can escape to fish. Since I won't have a boat and am happy catching just about anything in the salt, any suggestions on where I should go and what I could aim for?

Look for a response from Saltydancin' Dave, he lives there. Was our host at the last Florida Fish-in a few months ago.
Go back to the main page and look in the "Fish In" section for the last Florida one in 2006. It's still there and has a lot of info. Snook and pompano along the beaches, redfish and trout on the grass flats.

You'll probably have to drive a few miles to get to the beaches where the snook fishing in the surf should be fantastic! Nokomis Beach is north of town off Albee Road, where you'll find http://www.caseykeyanglersandoutfitters.com[/url:28ab9] & Kevin Cooke is usually up the fishing reports. Manasota Key has 4 different beach access areas plus the Lemon Bay area. Casperson Beach is just south of town & there are ares to fish, but like the other gulf beaches one has to walk beyond the sunbathers to find a place that the backcast isn't snagging bathing suits or those that are of the opinion that in the 90 degree temps, 90 % humidity and heat indexes in the 120's that southwest Florida is unofficially a nudist colony !

MNFisher,

Go early. This is the time of year to fish an hour or so before daylight til about 9 - 10am or so. Get off the sand before the bikini hatch takes place. Go shower and have a rum runner or beer in your hand by noon.

The Snook are on the beaches, preferably near some sort of pass. Another forum friend cast to about 40 of them. Use your white, white or white flies for them beach Snook and don't cast out too far. They're right there where the water meets the sand for the most part feeding on sandfleas, and baitfish.

You've GOT to let them go though as they are out of season.

Good luck.

Oh, you'll not miss the bikini hatch. You just don't want to be fishing while it's going on. You'll be at the Tiki bar sippin' on that rum runner or beer and takin' it all in.

Went out to Manasota Key / Blind Pass Beach last week where the 2006 Fish-In waters began, except was fishing the gulf beach for C & R snook. Must have been over 100 snook in the surf with some tarpon up by the rocks that a few tower boats were targeting for filming. Even a few bull reds were being caught, and at first glance we just thought they were tarpon ! BIG FISH ! Headed back out there next week on a day the waters haven't been stirred by the thunderstorms & the winds out of the east !

Well I made it to Venice and back. Kevin from Casey Key Anglers and Outfitters ( http://www.caseykeyanglersandoutfitters.com/[/url:3d75c] ) offered (on FAOL - part of this thread disappeared) to take me out and show me how to fish for snook at night. Boy did he! Between us we caught about 90 ranging in size from 20" or so to a measured 25". Kevin is a great guy and a pleasure to fish with. If you're ever in the area, make sure to look him up. He knows what the fish are doing and will have just what you need to catch them. Can't wait to get back there!

Glad you got some pirate of the seas fishing fun in before the rains & had one of those "average for the summer" catch & release sessions ! Thought y'all had gotten rained out when we had stopped to get some fly tying materials after some snook-on-the-beach fishing & was informed of the planned foray !

You are more than welcome Tom! Just one of those nights when everything came together. I put your photos up on our site in the photo gallery!
