Flounder on a fly rod?

Dear Board,

I've never done it, but I hope to do it come July.

Would Clouser Minnows on a Deep Sinking IV line work?

I'm not afraid or embarassed to tip those Clouser's with a strip of squid.

I've done exactly that from shore, less the squid strip. Did not catch keepers, but did catch flounder. No reason it should not work for larger fish. If you are going for meat, I am not sure why you'd use a fly rod. Often you want to get down in deeper water and mono and weight would be mroe efficient.

I catch a few every year.
In this area when the peanut bunker are schooling in late summer and early fall the fluke (summer flounder) will be close behind, and catchable from shore.
When I target them I use a red and white clouser fished close to the bottom.

Hey Avalon,

As a youth growing up in coastal NC, we
did a lot of flounder fishing. Oregon Inlet
was a flounder hotspot before they built the
bridge and shut down the ferry. The large
flat fish could be routinely caught in knee
deep waters within a few feet of the bank
and were quite the sport on my fly rod. Far
from a purist, a splitshot and a small
spinner blade above a # 8 hook tipped with
a small piece of shrimp did the job well.

I catch quite a few in the surf and on the flats here with Clousers and decievers.Unless your fishing deep water,an intermediate or floating line is fine.A black over chartreuse Clouser with gold flash has been a killer this spring.I have had a few hit flies on top just as im lifting it out of the water.You dont have to keep the fly on the bottom to get hits.Good luck.

I have caught a lot of flounder Alsea Bay Oregon over the years but never on a fly rod. My opinion, if you hook a large one you will be in for quite a battle on the fly rod. Great Sport !

I've only caught one. I was fishing for King salmon (who run near the bottom). Using a rather large Castwell Marblehead and a medium fast strip. (Fly is in the Fly of the Week Archives.)

Dear Board,

Thanks for the tips and votes of confidence. It's good to know I'm not crazy and you actually can catch them on flies.

I generally keep all the keeper flounder I catch, but the ratio of throwbacks to keepers is usually about 10 or 12 to 1 and I figured I might as well break out the flyrod and catch the throwbacks instead of dragging 2 ounces of lead and a fluke killer rig across the bottom of the bay.

I imagine if you hit a nice school of them you could have a really good time. I've caught flounder to 6 or 7 pounds on spinning and baitcasting gear. Flounder that size are hard to get unstuck from the bottom, I can't imagine how you could do it with a fly rod but I'd sure like to try.

I've caught flounder on the flats of Punta Gorda, FL while fishing for reds, sea trout, and snook. Did pretty good with this (actually the Sabalo one):
