I find salt water patterns real easy to tie because it doesn't take much to get a fishable fly and they are big and easy to work with. Just a simple black over white bucktail with a pinch of flash inbeween will work. My favorite color pattern for salt is white and chartruese. Other easy patterns that work well are blonds: bucktail tail, mylar body, and a bucktail wing. My favorite colors for that fly are red and white.

My go to pattern is made out of a gold mylar body with a wing of a pinch of white bucktail with four chart, saddle hackles. Eyes are painted on the finished head with nail polish and coated with hard as nails. Great fly and quick, cheap, and easy to tie.

Lots of flash and eyes are the only general rule for salt water flies.
