I had a seal scare the crap out of me this summer. I was in a canoe with my buddy trolling for stripers in the Penobscot when a seal made a big splash behind us, I know that I had to check my shorts that night.

micro, i was trolling a huge flat wing from the yak one time, and there was a husge splash and a seal surfaced--he had gone for the fly! thank god he didn't take it!
Seals make great angling companions.
On the outter Cape, a pod of 20 or so will follow you down the beach, presumaby checking out your casting style and doing a little surfing.
If you happen to hook on to a fish, land it quick, or your drag will really sing.
The simpler the outfit, the more skill it takes to manage it, and the more pleasure one gets in his achievements.

I liked your story because it so reminds me of my favorite fishing time. In the AM, me in my yak, with the birds and the fish, the sun just pushing up on the horizon.
I just laugh when my family "harrasses" me about my early morning activities. Then, for some reason or other they are forced to get up with me and they inevitable marvel at the beauty of the morning.

I enjoyed the article too, But we don't see many seals here in the Texas panhandle. I fish out of a kayak also. I am in my mid-forties and still have a hard time sleeping the night before going fishing. Just like a kid. Keeps me young I guess. My fishing buddies never understand why I go so early in the morning. Launching in the dark from your favorite spot is what life is all about! Norm
Let's not forget sunset and night time, one of my favorites as well. I got out Friday and Saturday evening/night and got some striper to boot, the wind was a bit of a bear early in the evening, but water was glass when I came in - midnight friday night and 330 AM Saturday (Sunday morning)! I am a kayaker as well and really enjoy the feeling of being "in touch" with the water.
Dave, you keep claiming to be a Pirate, but it looks like a Poet is closer to the truth. Your writing was really set off by your pictures. Thanks.
