Thread: Zonkers in saltwater

    Default Zonkers in saltwater

Given The zonker is a rabbit strip fly, would the salt make it hard or brittle after using it? Would it go back to its natural state once dunked in the water again? What do you think would be the durability of a zonker in the salt? Any different that any feathered fly?
    Thanks,
    Bob

There are several ?bunny? tarpon flies that use rabbit strips. I wouldn?t see why the strip wouldn?t re-hydrate much the same way it would in fresh water.

I fish rabbit strip patterns in the So. Cal. surf, bays, and inshore. The rabbit usually outlasts the hook and is more durable than any other natural material that I use. I have flies that have taken more than 100 fish and are still servicable.

I agree, there are a number of zonker flies that are widely used in saltwater. I use a number myself with no problems.

Thanks for the replies, I am tying a few different patterns for a friend of a friend in Florida. I will dream up a sampling, the rabbit sounds good.
