Thread: Port Aransas Texas

    Default Port Aransas Texas

I am going to be on vacation in Port Aransas the first week of June and was wandering about the fishing prospects at this time and what size flyrod to bring. I have never ocean fished before so I am looking for a good place to start and wandering if I have to hire a guide to learn where the fish are.

You'll want to bring an 8wt. Hiring a guide for the first day really will help you have fun and make the rest of your days successful. Good guides would be Randy Charba, Chuck Naiser, or any of the guys at the Redfish Lodge in Rockport.

An 8 wgt will do fine.
Get in touch with Dean Thomas AKA slowride if you want a great guide. His specialty is the Light House Lakes area and Brown & Root Flats.
You might want to look at Coastal Kayak Angler Webb Site for additional information. [url=http://www.coastalkayakangler.com/:cfed9]Coastal Kayak Angler[/url:cfed9]

    I agree with Barry
Dean will keep you laughing and catching or maybe the other way around.
Sea Trout, Redfish, black drum are the big three. I would choose a 8 wt fast-action rod with a reel that holds some backing. Wading is one way. Kayaking is another. Flats skiff is still one more way.
Wading does take some good footwear.
Two things underwater to watch out for Oyster Bars, are like razors.
Stingrays are sometimes around. Shuffle your feet.
Above the water is the SUN cover up put on sunscreen, Big hat dark polarized glasses.
Sun Screen PF 35 or better.
Some times it rains but the Sun will get you any way.
Flies are Clousers in 2-6 Green or tan shades. Spoon flies are Deans favorite.
Poppers in dark or pink colors.
Learn to cast with any wind from any direction. Fish are tricky. They will make you hit yourself with a fly if they can.
