looping end of fly line?

i'm ining up a new 6wt line for freshwater and a little saltwater use. my 8wt was rigged with a loop made of the end of the fly line, then tied off with what looks like thin mono. i don't know what type of knot was used to tie off the mono part. is this something i can do with 6wt line? i heard it's good for heavier lines. just curious. thanks..

edit: can i use some spare 20# micron that i have lying around in place of the mono?

The folded line loop doen as you describe is very suitable for a 6wt. line. It is most commenly tyed with a snell or nail knot over the folded line. Personaly perfer to tye it wi 8 or 10 lbs. mono and coat with head cement or other glue to protect the knot. I have never had one fail with a fish on.

For 6 - 8 wt lines, I form my loops with 2 snell knots using 12# Ande. For smaller I use 10# and for 10 wt, I use 15 lb. BTW, the Ande is clear premium, not IGFA line. After tying the snells and when I'm satisfied with the loop, I'll coat the snells with Pliobond and let dry for 24 pllus hours.

I whip loops in all my lines from 4wt to 10wt,front and back.Just use a fly tying bobbin with mono or monochord thread and finish off with a whip finnish.Coat the wraps with Loon knot senes and your good to go.
