    Default Flies on icey waters.....

Shortly after moving to Colorado, wintertime, the weather was mild and a local river had some open water around the ice.

A friend told me about dropping a fly onto the ice, cross stream, and letting it plop into the open water. Hungry fish hiding under the ice would surely grab the bait.

So I did, and they did, and then I discovered that a fly, with any water on it at all, will hit the ice and freeze to it. So I caught one nice rainbow trout per fly, and the ice shelf started to look furry with hackle. Fun but expensive.

Theres a small stream not far from my farm here in SE Michigan. I have been fishing it lately, not much luck. There is ice shelf on both sides on most of the stream. I will try your method and let you know. Probably won't have the freezing to the ice issue, hovering in high 20's. I have been using streamers for the small mouth, won't hurt to try the dries. I'll try a large muddler. Thanks again, Rich
