the fly is in fact derived from Oliver Kite's bare hook nymph, which he would use as a simple bare hook- until he was informed that an undressed hook was illegal as it was not a fly.
Major Kite thereafter used to tie in a turn of thread for purposes of legality.
The fly can be dressed to suit the occasion, useful ties imitate mayfly nymphs and emergers; scuds; caddis, dry mayflies... etc
All depends on how you apply the materials.
You decide on the profile of the fly and make it to suit the hatch at hand.
