Dying materials

This might sound silly but I am going to share it anyway. I like to tye Rangeley streamers, and I have been having a hard time finding certain colors of Whiting American Rooster Necks for sale. I have several on order from reputable vendors, and when I ask for shipment dates the answer has been " when Whiting is ready to ship, they will ship". Well, I am going to the Rangeley (Maine) region in June, and I have several patterns I want to tye. Which brings me to my new experience. I looked up the Kool Aid dying instructions on this site and dyed some grizzly and white hackle the colors I was looking for. The colors came out great, but the real benefit is that dying my own material has added so much to the tying experience. I never took so much time tying a fly as I did with this hackle! I recommend trying this, not only will you save a ton of money, you will find a new satisfation in your fly tying.

The Mallard Flank didn't dye as well( I had heard it was harder to dye). How does it dye with the Kool Aid??

You have to wash then soak the mallard in a dish detergent/warm water solution for several hours to get the natural oils out. Rinse well and then dye them.
