    Default Polar Bear hair

Is Polar Bear hair legally available in the U.S.? If so who sells it ?

As far as I know it's available legally. It's awfully expensive, though.

Yes, it is available legally. Try the BearLodge Angler in Wyoming. [url=http://www.bearlodgeangler.com:60f49]http://www.bearlodgeangler.com[/url:60f49]

There is also a fellow in Spokane Wa, he is listed on the Fly Tying Suppliers List,

Is there a material that would work as a substitute for polar bear hair?

Ain't nothin' like the real thing. But any long noncompressable white hair will work ok. Kid goat for example.

Polar bear has a translucence that other materials don't.

John Waite lives in Spokane. Has published a book called "Serious Flyfishing"
John is a fly fisherman and has been involved for many years. A 24 Lb Rainbow Trout was caught on a polar bear streamer John tied, was at one time a record in Idaho.
The book has a lot of his flys using PB.
I'm not sure if he is still in business as I visited him a few years ago. Really a nice guy and he is supposed to be one of the few legal sellers of PB in the States.
His Phone # is: 1-800-347-7585. This is the # I find in my book.

Of course I have no $$ interest, just happy to have spent some time with John and was allowed to look at and buy some PB.

I have a small and precious patch of Polar bear hair I picked up legally a few years back and the closest I've found to Polar Bear is the white fur from a skunk. It has almost the same translucent look as the polar bear, especially the fur from the tail. It sure is a LOT cheaper and moreavailable. Other than tying Salmon flies, I think I'd substitute Skunk fur. I'm pretty sure the fish won't know the difference and you can get is from several places like hideandfur.com.

I was given a patch of Polar Bear and, while trying to figure what pattern I wanted to tie with it, I found out what it cost. Now, I have it locked up in my gun safe.

    Just a thought.
What about the outer fur from a Smaoyd{sp} husky? It is long and very translucient. We would bath ours witha little bit of Mrs. Wright bluing in with the shampoo. Man that coat did sparkel.

I use Yak Hair as a substitute for Polar Bear. Just my 2 cents. John
