Thanks,
Amazing....this site not only grows on you, it also makes you grow.
Bones, I STILL remeber learning to "treat" the WHOLE feather.
JC & LF, thanks again, you's guys are the best.....and thank JC for making the belly smaller and the fish bigger!
Al Campbell....dang, I sure do wish I had known that man. We all miss him.
That is a great looking fly. I'm going to add some to my boxes. I especially like the "we are of diminished mental capacity..." line. Nice work.
Evening All,
I have a question about deceivers, What kind of hackle do you use? Strung saddle hackle or dry fly hackle (That what it looks like in the picture of materials)? I wouldn't think that good dry fly hackle would be needed.
Dan
We usually grab up some salt-water capes along the line. Strung hackles are fine also. Matter of fact, strung eliminates some of the sorting. Lazy we ARE. Definitely no need for dry-fly quality hackle. They sometimes get pulled out on the water when it is gin-clear anyway.
If we're tying sorta small we will use some grade 3 stuff.
I have a question, "What is the difference between, Salt Water Capes, and the normal Capes Freshwater Fly Tiers use?
Is there any real difference, if so, what is the difference?
That question, has puzzled me for a long time now, everytime I hear the reference to Salt Water Capes or Hackle. Many of the saltwater patterns are also use in freshwater fly fishing.

As in much of anything.....marketing.
Usually SW capes, sometimes called steelhead or bass capes too, are webby, wide, and softer(?)....bigger? Better suited to "soaking" water and sinking.
I think "normal" freshwater would require more floating characteristics, as in dry fly.
Maybe.......?
I STILL think it IS marketing. Big fish eat little fish.....FW or SW. Sinking bugs is sinking bugs....FW or SW.

Thanks Lee,
That is what I thought but figured I ought to make sure. I'd hate to have a fish refuse my fly because I was cheep!
Dan
It is usually the length of the feathers which make it a saltwater cape, yes webby too, but many saltwater flies are VERY long as compared to any wet fly or dry fly one would tie.
