Thread: feather uses

    Default feather uses

I've got some dryfly India necks in assorted colors that have usable hackle in the 10-14 range but does anyone know any uses (apart from Adams style wings)for the small hackles at the small end of the neck. Seems a pity to toss them or just let them sit in the box.

Caddis tied with feather tip wings work great. They can be used for feather tip tails.
Indian necks can make some great streamers.

    Hi dfly,

Gary LaFontaine used to tie a fly (the Occasion in his book The Dry Fly on page 266) that makes good use of these feathers. The pattern has hackle point wings sticking straight forward from the eye. Following is hackle around the hook (just behind the eye) and then a short body formed from floss. You can vary the colors as needed to match the hatch. The fly is tied on the front half of the hook with the back half bare. In floats in the surface film wings up and hook point down. Take care & ...

    Dfly,

If you are a rod builder, or know one that does feather inlays, those little feathers look right nice inlayed onto rods in varoius spots. I've used them as alignment marks, as 'borders' around information areas, as accents on guide wraps.

    Good Luck!

    Joe,

    Glad it helped.

Done correctly it's incredibly beautiful. I've completely given up fancy thread work in favor of feather inlays.

    I'm gonna go with:
You could be bold and daring and do that scaled/overlapped bodywork of some of the realy off the hook salmon flies.
To make it really cool just pop a neat color onto the tips with a Sharpie.
