Default S. Uuan Pattern for Cheesman Canyon

Am reading Roger Hill's book on fishing the Cheesman Canyon section of the S. Platte River near Deckers, Colorado. He recommends a 2 inch ultra chenille san juan worm in several colors. There are apparently three different sizes of ultra chenille on the market. Suggestions on which one works best? Thanks.

I usually use the middle size. Never known the SJW to require 2", tho. I tie them on TMC2457 #12s. about an inch and a quarter total, and they work just fine where I fish. Never tried em in Cheeseman, tho.

Just use the regular "Ultra Chennile" not the medium or the micro ultra. 2 inches is too big. On the San Juan most worms are only 3/4 to one inch...I don't have anything in my box over an inch. Red, burnt orange, and natrul brown are the best colors for the San Juan. Don't know about Cheeseman Canyon. Also fish these in the faster riffle type of water. These are the things that work on the San Juan hopefully you will be successful on Cheeseman.

    Have a nice day,

    Loomis,
I guide up there a bit and would be happy to send you some examples and when you should be using them, ie size and color and time frame. Send me an email and I will hook you up.

More generically, how do you fish them? Dead drift underwater or dry?

Wet with a midge dropper tied to the hook curve.

    PA,
I tie a dropper off of it to the eye. Dead-drifted with an indicator. It is definitely a riffle fly for the canyon.
