Thread: Seal fur education

1. Default Seal fur education

OK. I need an education on seal fur.

Is it legal in the US? If so, under what conditions?

Assuming it is legal, how does one find "quality" seal fur? What are some highly reputable sources?

Thanks.

bimini, since you started the SLF thread I guess you saw this by Mike K.

"--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
been picking up seal fur dubbing from john mclain at feathersmc.com, its great stuff, and affordable....colours cant be beat"

It stimulated me to go to the site and I have ordered some seals fur....it's an interesting site and here's a little info John Mclain shared with me..[by the way he seems like a class act...heck, a friend of Ronn Lucas would be]

" I don?t want to tell you your business but seal dubbing isn?t my preferred choice for dry flies. It?s great for wets and nymphs but a little too coarse for dries (my opinion). The colors are maybe a little too gaudy for matching the hatch."

Also, I don't know the legality issues but note that he got his from old coats.

Ducksterman,

Yes, thank you, I saw that reference in my SLF thread. So, I decided I needed to learn more about this material.

Cheers,

www.huntersangling.com[/url:b9f23] carries seal fur that they say is from a legal source. They also carry lots of other things that can be difficult to find elsewhere. I've seen lots of their seal colors in person and they are beautiful!

I've purchased seal fur from Hunters and also from Feather Craft. Both provide a quality product that they indicate is legal to purchase and use in the U.S.

I've had a couple fly shop owners in Canada tell me that they would sell me seal fur but that it is illegal to ship it into the country and that if it were to be discovered and confiscated, I would be out both the money and the fur.

I chose not to place eather a shop owner or myself in that position.

I've seen Hunters and I'm guessing at this point but I think John McLain's will be more for less $'s and the colors look great....I'll try to remember to confirm this.

J Castwell,

The reason I created a new thread is that I feel it is a distinct topic that would get lost in the SLF thread.

Does that really warrant an "anger" icon from you as the Administrator? If so, then you've convinced me that this is not a place for me.

Cheers,

Why the anger icon JC?. There is nothing wrong with the mans posting. In fact it is quite relevant & has every right to "stand alone" from the SLF one.Strange you trying to loose custom? LOL
Other than Jim Smith in the UK who carries a nice selection of Seal Fur have a look at this mans stuff. Very nice range of "more modern colours" http://www.flyfishingworld.co.uk/[/url:8f50c]
