Basically there are two types of material used in thread for fly tying, nylon and polyester. Nylon is elastic and will stretch, while Polyester is non elastic (compared to Nylon). All thread differ depending on three major components; material, construction, finish.

Remove twisting in the line periodically, that is cause by winding around the hook shank, twisting reduces the breaking strength of the thread.
