    Default Schwannundaze???

Found a pattern that looks interesting, and I'd like to try it, but it calls for black Schwannundaze. Obviously, I don't have any.
    1. What the heck is it?
    2. Is there anything I can use instead?
    Thanks.

    CJ,

"Red Schwannundaze Ugly" name of fly on Hans Weilmann's website. It appears to be a translucent red plastic material according to photo. Apparently comes in different colors as also found a black stonfly which called for black schwannundaze. It's a plastic ribbing material and I have some similar stuff in translucent red and green.

    cklenske,

Swannundaze is a vinyl translucent material which has long disappeared from the market. It was introduced and marketed by Frank Johnson in (according to some dusty synapses, so I may be off by a few years) the early eighties.

It came in a range of colors and widths, and had a D-shape diameter.

There are some present-day replacement materials, but the details will have to come from other posters more into 'realistic' tying. For my own tying I have no use for it.

    Cheers,
    Hans W

As Hans says there are "modern" equivelents V Rib is one. Uni do one on spools. The original though came in much wider sizes than the modern stuff. Once got hold of a piece that was 3/16 wide and a shallow D shape. The modern stuff tends to be thicker but not as wide.

Can't be much more help than that.
    Regards,

    Alan.

There are new names for basically the same stretch soft plastic that comes in a long rolled up strip, names like V Rib and Larva Lace.

Vinyl Rib sold spooled by UTC is almost identical to Schwannundaze and comes in several sizes and lots of colors.

By the way IF you want it smaller than the smallest size available you can drop a section into boiling water and slowly stretch it. It will retain its "D" shaped profile but get skinnier and stay that way. It is a neat way to get it to the size you want without buying all the available sizes.

I use it for ribbing on larger nymphs and for ribbed bodies on emergers.

I'm partial to elastic beading cord. Comes in several widths but it stretches quite a bit so you can easily form a tapered body if you wish by adjusting the tension as you apply. I only use transparent to expose the dubbing/thread/tinsel/etc. underneath.

Thanks, guys, I appreciate the info. I'll go hunting for some of the options and give it a try. I knew I'd get the help I needed here.
    Thanks again.
