Default Has Any Tyer Influenced Your Tying

I think for all who know me that you all know who my mentor and friend is. I always tied wet flys and fished them since the time I started fly fishing and Tying. My mentor truly influenced me further and turned it from a love to a passion. Any one out there have had the same experience with a tyer who has passed away or is living. Thought this might be a cool thing to hear. Always like to hear stories like this and see how different we all are in a common area.

    Hey Folks,

Al Campbell! It was he who initially
convinced me fly tying was not akin to
rocket science. His encouragement on chat
as well as his weekly articles encouraged
me to give it a shot. Some six years later
I still enjoy it very much and tie daily or
nearly so. Great source of relaxation and
the fact that they produce fish is icing on
    the cake. Warm regards, Jim

Well dont know if this counts, because I never met them, but Dr.David Engerbretson and LeRoy Hyatt's The anglers art on PBS had a huge impact on how I tyed,LeRoys "I dont think the fish cares " attitude made Me re-think the way I tied, and in turn improved it!!My wife bought Me the entire series for X-mas

I am with G-man. I had the opportunity to spend one afternoon with LeRoy Hyatt. He taught me that fish-catching flies do not have to be pretty. He makes REAL flies for fishing. When I watched him do a class he pointed out what can go wrong while tying the fly. He is a very down-to-earth person. I have seen and been in classes by other famous fly tyers and I consider LeRoy tops.

I should also mention Mike Lawson for his sometimes easy and proven patterns (note that I am excluding the No-Hackle dun because he did not invent the pattern and it is very difficult to tie).

"I never string up a trout rod without wild anticipation. Often, I've
been exhausted on trout streams, uncomfortable, wet, cold, briar-scarred,
sunburned, mosquito-bitten, but never, with a fly rod in my hand, have I been unhappy." Charles Kuralt

    Hi Andy,
    Great question.
My first mentor is a fellow by the name of Roger George. He taught me how to tie and how to observe and imitate insects. He was heavily influenced by the Leisenring school of thought.
My next mentor came much later in life. Mary Dette Clark. She taught me the secrets of the Catskill style tie , precision, economy in tying mechanics and how to not be afraid to share knowledge.
    Take care,
    Jim
By the way Andy you tie one mean wet fly.

I would say Steven H. McGarthwaite has had the most influence on my tying. I think him for the knowledge and help he has passed on to me. I guess you could say Steven was my mentor. John

When I started tying I did not have a mentor and did not even know anyone who tied.

Today, everytime I see a fly tier doing a demo, it has an influence on how I tie. Some tiers are just more influential than others.

I have found most of my influence from alot of tyers I have seen tye at shows and this site whic includes fish in's fly swaps and on faol site. I guess if ya think about it where ever anyone got there influence it all gets passed around between us.
