Default What does Adams dry fly imitate?

    Hello,

I wonder whether Adams dry fly originally imitated caddisfly or mayfly. What I know is that it imitated Michigan caddis, so many books put Adams in the caddis section. But, isn't Michigan caddis green drake? Then, did Adams imitate mayfly?

    I will appreciate your comments.

It doesn't say in that article what the original body was tied with. Was it muskrat like it is today?

I believe the original recipe was:

wing: grizzly hackle tips tied spent
    tail: golden pheasant neck feathers
    body: grey yarn
    hackle: dark grizzly and ginger

Except there aren't any Callibaetis in Michigan...(and you need speckled wings).

Here is some interesting reading if you want to learn more about the origin of the Adams.

not to stir the pot, but, a bit of looking and I found these three in Michigan:

Callibaetis ferrugineus ferrugineus, Callibaetis fluctuans, Callibaetis skokianu

Now, if an Adams is the bug of choice for these is another matter
