Lady fisher. Is this what you are referring to? It is labled Raffia. This is a natural type product that I picked up at Wally-World.

I have seen the plastic or cellophane type stuff but it wasn't refered to as Swiss straw.

    Wooly -

Is that the stuff that is sorta like a paper material?

The "Swiss Straw" that I have is more like a plastic material and really shiny.

Gary, it's very much like paper except that it splits laterally easily. most of the time when you don't want it to. But for the smaller flies and nymphs this doesn't appear to be a problem. I haven't used it for the large stone flies.

Ladyfisher: I'm glad, hate to think I wasted a buck.

I'm exactly where Gary is on this...sorry Wooly but IMO I'd use something else.

Actually I think there is a place for both types. Clearly if the goal is to have a fly or nymph that doesn't absorbe water then the plastic or rubber types would be the material of choice. But, as I have read there are a number of recipes that call for rafia or natural Swiss straw for which the material that I presented, would be used.
I also have and use several of the varieties of "Flashback" and "Scudback". All have their place and usage.

For most of the insects that are imitated, the wings are transparent. The best material I've seen is clear, holographic present bag filler. It looks like big wide tinsel and you can get a lifetime's supply at the craft or grocery stores for a buck or two. You can also get whole sheets of it (for wrapping presents) if you want real big wings like for butterflies or something

I found this post while doing a search for swiss straw. It is synthetic raffia also know as viscose rayon ribbon or viscose rayon raffia ribbon.
