The Summer 2005 edition of Flyfishing and Tying Journal has a step by step article by Skip Morris with pictures, too. I don't know if you've used the Copper John before, but if not try it in some colors other than copper - like red, olive, chartreuse, etc. It's terrific.

There is a tutorial at [url=http://www.troutflies.com:49368]www.troutflies.com[/url:49368] by Harry Mason. The same tutorial is in the Fly of the Week Archives here on FAOL. It's a very in-depth step by step on this pattern.

    Thanks for all the replys.

P.S. i have never used a copper john before, and have heard mixed reviews about the original copper john, so i will have to try other colors.

    thanks again

FG...I have the habit of simplifyng (sp?) any pattern I like. Has always worked for me, as with the CJ...I found that red wire, peacock herl collar & a brass bead is a great pattern! Not trying to take away from John's pattern at all, just that it is a quicker tye & produces well for me. I had John as a customer at a shop I worked at in Colo. & spent many days watching him & his nynphing techniques in the Cheeseman Canyon on the S. Platte & the man knew how to fish!!
    ...just my 2 cents worth!

Thats just a beadhead red brassie pattern and a highly effective deadly pattern as well. I was looking at that link to Charlies fly shop and man he runs a good shop and some neat patterns. I sent him an email about materials that I cant find and he had the super hair to tie the jujubee midge and is really helpful. I recommend.

    Definitely a nice pattern.

How essential is the epoxy step? What are your thoughts on using Sally H or something instead? Not looking for permission to substitute, just an opinion from anybody who's used them with or without that feature.
