Not having ever fished for much less caught a trout until I was 46 years old I was happily unaware of the chironomid until about 2002 when I had an opportunity to fish for trout in a lake on Ft. Apache reservation in eastern AZ. My friend who had become a resident of AZ inquired of another fisherman what was a good pattern. He shared a few chironomid patterns he had tied with us which resulted in a successful fishing day. Similar pattern in a red color as I recall. Wish I could justify a trip back to the area, the Mogollon Rim of AZ is one of the best kept secrets in America, don't tell anyone.

Caught the largest trout I’ve ever caught on a pattern very similar to this one. Was on a private lake in eastern Ore.

Crazy how well they work. AND, so simple to tie.

GREAT looking fly and yet another, I, who does not tie, CAN possibly tie. So far my "talent" relegates me to tying single or possibly two step patterns such as Copper John or Brassie. Looking forward to broadening my horizons soon though. Time is short............

PS: I just know "they'll" eat this one.

If you can only tie one or two flies, a copper John and brassie are two good ones! Don’t be afraid to tie the copper John in different colors. Red is my fav, purple or dark blue are good. I even tie them in a silver color.

To catch fish, flys do not have to be perfect, mine are never all that well tied, but they work fine.
