I also make my own poppers for bluegill/bass. After tying in the material for the tail, I run a thread base on the shank of the hook for the glue to hold to. I then apply the glue on top of the thread base and install the foam body. Once the body is pushed down and in place, I use a reverse action tweezer to clamp the foam together which will squeeze the glue out the bottom of the slit in the foam. Once the glue is set you can remove the tweezers and there is usually no gap.
