    Default Tims Hopper

Tim Neal’s neat, old-school, Michigan pattern; comes with a nice video

Changed up the tying sequence a bit - not a fan of naked palmered hackle so I wrapped it front to back and ribbed wire thru the hackle. Change color/size to suit your needs.

    hook - Dai Riki 730 #8
    thread - UTC 140 cream
    rib - x-small wire gold
butt/abdomen - Congo Hair honey mustard
    legs - medium rubber cornsnake
hackle - brown (undersize by 2)
    wing - elk hair hair
    head - deer hair

Using foam for the underbody would give a high floating hopper pattern with a nice profile.

    Alberto,

Foam would definitely make it float better. I was trying to stay as true to the original pattern as possible (reversing the direction the hackle was palmered and adding a wire rib being minor adjustments). Truthfully, this isn’t a fly I’d choose to fish with; it would need a lot of floatant or constant changing to keep it on top, and I hate using good dry fly hackle on wets. Fun to tie though and a neat study in making do with materials that were available at the time.

    Regards,
    Scott
