Fumble Bum
I tried tying some North Country Spiders today. I started on a size 14 hook and I couldn't make anything work right. When I finished it, it looked like someone had stepped on it in something sticky. So I tried a size 12, and got the same results. I know my hands are getting a little feeble, but I think my supplies are getting old and brittle too. My peacock herl is probably 10+ years old. I'll try again tomorrow.

I soak my peacock herl in downey fabric softener. I keep some in zip lock bags

If you are using strung peacock herl get an eye or two, big ones, they are stronger then herl. The herl is usually floor sweepings, so to speak.
How close to the eye are you talking about? I agree that the long herls (strands) beneath the eye are a little stronger, but not up into the eye itself in my opinion. Those get pretty brittle. Maybe I am misreading the part of the eye you are talking about. Comment?Originally Posted by narcodog

I tried again today, still using peacock herl on a size 12 hook. But this time instead of using partridge, I used Guinea Fowl. It turned out much better. Partridge is so fragile that if my hands shake even the slightest bit, the stem breaks.

Try steaming your feathers. It may keep them from being so brittle. Works for me on older feathers.
