Default first fly set up suggestions

My boys are now very interested in fly fishing and they are asking me about a set up. They are 11 so I'm not sure there is a rod length I should consider since they are short, does that even matter? Also, can you guys suggest a decent but not extra expensive set up? I figure I don't want to get them a wally's set up but they ain't getting the most expensive either.
    Thanks in advance.

I started my daughter on an 8' 4 wt, that or a 5 wt will do fine. any decent medium action. look around check closeouts sales etc. a good but not expensive reel. and a storage tube made from PVC pipe.

    Martin,

I have two suggestions for a great starter outfit for your boys.

TFO (Temple Fork Outfitters) makes a great starter outfit, with the Bug Launcher fly rod. Either a 7 foot 4/5 wt or an 8 foot 5/6 wt. Each comes with the reel/ backing/line that matches the rod. They sell for $170. Lifetime Warranty.

Another possible outfit would be from ECHO, their Echo Base Kit. You can pick an 8 foot 4 wt or a 9 foot 5 wt, rod/reel/line combo and they also sell for $170.
I believe they also have a great warranty.

When my son was 6 years old, he won a Cabela's outfit (8', 4 wt, 4 piece).

He is 16 now and still uses the same outfit. Here is a picture of him with a 26" Rainbow from a San Juan River trip last June.

Cabela's has a set up for kids at $59.99.
Also two other rod combos at $99.99.

My local fly shop carries several options, I'll update when I decide what to get.
    Thanks all for your input.
