I consider myself to be a neophyte when it comes to fly fishing. As much as I've learned and know, there is still so very much that I don't. I know that rods will cast differently depending on the line they are cast with. I know that they will feel different depending on their action. What I don't understand is how you can tell what type of line would be a good choice for the rod you have, other than line weight determination. I guess what I'm asking is this. Is there a way to determine whether or not a line will probobly perform well on a given rod by taking into acount the rod's action and the line's taper? For instance, is there a line(taper)that will cast better on a fast rod versus a slow rod, and vice versa. When line manufacturers make lines and tapers do they have a specific rod action in mind, and likewise with rod manufacturers? Do they, in turn, design a rod with a specific taper in mind? Any thoughts?
