Default Which side do you put your vise?

I've always tied with my vise to the left of me, over a table, and am considering switching it to my right, so that I can adjust the height lower without hitting the table. Are you guys righties or lefties? Or middle of the road, which would still hit the table. I have just read about people who are more comfortable with the vise at a lower point than is available on your tying table, so am going to try that.

I'm lost. How does swapping from one side to the other allow for a lower height?

I'm right-handed so my vise is on my left and I work the thread with my right. I'm partial to my vise being higher than most. I like resting my elbows on the table and having the jaws at eye level.

i use an upside down extension piece to drop the head of my vice so the head is quite a bit lower than "normal". i find it is less strain on my neck and shoulders that way. incidentally, my vice is on the left

i would think the position of your vise is determined by which is your dominant hand i.e., vise on the left for right-handers and opposite for left-handers. Vise height is whatever is most comfortable..............

If I place the vise on my left, my right side is over the table, so can't lower it or will hit the table. With the extension like Garthman has, I can lower it down and have my right hand over thin air to work, but as Don mentions, I can't rest my elbows on the table then. Just looking for the most comfortable position.

Could you clamp something (a piece of plywood, e.g.) to the table, creating a cantilever to have your vise hang over the edge? Then you could drop the height and tie at a lower elevation without bumping against anything.
Going in the other direction, is there anyway to raise your seat?

    Regards,

Thanks, I already have my chair as high as it will go, but will look into something to drop off of my table. Would like to find something like a keyboard drawer thingie from a computer desk.
