Default Fiberglass Rod Blank Spigot Ferrules

I've built one fiberglass rod before and on that rod I was able to sand down the spigot just a little bit to make it fit. This rod is a fiberglass 5wt and the spigot ferrule doesn't fit all the way or even close to where it should. I was wondering if I could trim it down and not have it be a problem, does anyone know how much of the ferrule can be removed without it being a problem. If it was just a small difference I'd sand it down but there a little over an inch difference. The spigot itself is about 2.5'' If I cut it down that will leave it at 1.5'' is that enough for a 5 wt to not break?
