Not sure if this is an after effect of Fukishima on the local hatches or something out of a Herter's catalogue.


hook - Mustad 3906 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - woodduck flank
rib - oval tinsel gold
body - red fox
hackle - hen dun/brown
wing - barred woodduck flank (mine's a bit meatier than Mr. Sawada's but that's where the sweet spot was on the feathers I had available).


Part 1

mash barb, start thread, tie in rib, wrap to bend




measure (hook length) some woodduck flank fibers; tie in/trim






dub thread/dub body






rib body; tie off/trim




tie in (folded) hackles by tip; wrap, tie off/trim

Part 2

stroke fibers down (tying between coats of paint on the kitchen cabinets - Benjamin Moore Advance Satin, Palace White; nice paint); cover with thread wraps






prep 2 slips of woodduck, measure (tips just past bend), fold/pinch, wax thread, tie in; tipped the hook up a bit to use gravity to my advantage










trim butts, whip finish, SHHAN (2 coats, at least)
