    Default Gapen's Thief SBS

Dan Gapen's simplified version of his dad's Muddler. Original had a dubbed wool head; I've also seen it with a hackle throat, which I may add on future flies.

    hook - Mustad 79580 #6
    thread - Danville 6/0 black
    tail - duck quill red
    rib - small wire silver
    body - tinsel silver
    underwing - squirrel tail
    wing - turkey
    collar - ostrich herl

    Part 1

mash barb, start thread (about 2 eye widths from eye); tie in wire, wrap to bend

measure (gap width past bend) matching duck quill segments; tie in/trim, return to original tie-in

tie in tinsel, wrap to tail and back; tie off/trim

counterwrap wire, helicopter end, cover with thread

measure (tips to tail) a sparse clump of squirrel tail; trim to length, dose butts with Sally, tie in

    Part 2

    prep turkey quill segments

measure (tips to tail), fold/pinch, wax heavily, tie in, crushing the fibers on top, trim butts

tie in some ostrich herl, twist around thread

wrap herl, tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN (be careful, the herl really wicks it up)

    Regards,
    Scott

The one I tie has black chenille or the head. Might be a little more durable.

Scott, you've got it in "overdrive" this week. Think I counted 10 new flies just today! It must be good tying weather (ie, cold) where ever you are. In any case, I appreciate your efforts. I don't tie / use every fly that you post but there are usually a few that jump out to me. And, you time in researching flies, expertly tying, and photographing is apparent. Thanks for all of your efforts.

Thanks all. I've got a few more left to post and then I'll finish up the index.

    Regards,
