Thanks for the Post , it was something I had not considered . I get tired shoulders and neck when I tie for any length of time .
I jury rigged a 1/2 inch piece of Plywood to 2 pieces of 2x4 to get 2" higher with my clamp on . Seems a lot better as my back is no longer bent over . The fly is now about chin high which seems to work for me . I'm going to get some better wood and make the change to my workbench . I'm going to experiment a bit with elbow rests . The cardiac specialist that put the little wire thingy in my heart uses padded elbow rests , He said it helped prevent fatigue .
For God's sake, Don't Quote me! I'm Probably making this crap up!

    Hi All,

There is a very simple way to work out the correct height for your vice, I am amazed that so few people teach vice set up in fly tying classes.

Sit in the chair you will be tying in. Get comfy and place your clenched fist on the bottom of your jaw. Where your elbow comes to is the right height. This is the height at which your arms are relaxed and not straining your back neck or sholders.

How do you get the vice into this position is a little more difficult. Here is the set up I use.

    Regards

    Alan.

Haven't tied a lot on my vice yet. Guess I'm not too edjumucated for this topic. But.....I don't like looking down at the fly. I have a somewhat lower chair....one of those crazy back support chairs, where you place your front knees...?...hoof......just kiddin', where you put your knees on a pad and your hiney on the higher pad. Your back is then sorta straight. I use the extension for my c-clamp in addition to the standrod, on the pedestal base, just to get the vice jaw higher. Higher like Mr. Williams stated above. I look almost directly at my fly....uh.....the fly. Sorry, just my 2 cents. bye
