    Default Hair Materials

I just acquired some hair from a local gentleman(not his) and other than the deer, I'm not sure what flies I can tie with it. I'm sure there are places to find this info except I'm not real efficiant with computers or searches. The hair that I have is; black bear, caribou, boar, dall sheep, moose, and deer. Any recipes for certain flies or sites that I can review would be helpfull.

    THANKS,

    FC,

There are loads of patterns out there that use one or more of the materials you've acquired.

That being said, however, obviously you've not yet found a 'use' for those flies in your fishing.

If I were you, I'd hang onto the materials, and try adding/substituting them into the flies that you DO use. It should be pretty evident from the different materials what they may or may not be 'good' for in the flies you already use.

Just a few 'suggestions', and I'm sure others may add much more:

Black Bear makes good streamer hair and decent dubbing. Nice bushy tails too.

Moose Mane is great for ribing and for tails, as is the longer hair from boars. Moose body will spin, but not as well as deer in most cases. The body hair does work for Wulff style dries. Dall Sheep I'm not too familair with, but I'd see if can be spun like deer or used for wings on Wulffs, etc.. I know that Caribou spins well, and makes great humpys and bass bugs.

Play with it, have fun, experimenting with new materials in old patterns can give you flies that are very effective, new to the fish, and maybe you'll hit on a real 'winner' or two.

    Good Luck!

    Buddy

    Hi Carp,

    Just a few ideas.
black bear - Wings on any type of fly. Underfur for wirey dubbing on big nymphs.
caribou - spun hair for small irresistibles.
boar - bristles for antennaes, tails, legs or perhaps wrapped bodies.
dall sheep- excellent for spinning and trimming for coffin dry flies
    moose- tails, wrapped bodies

Just make sure the materials are clean.

    Hi Carp
In addition to the good suggestions you already have received..

The caribou floats a bit higher than deer and can be used as a substitute on many flies.

Moose hair is sometimes used for wings on wet flies, especially for salmon. And Black Bear is very good winging material.

Here are a couple of patterns to illustrate. [url=http://www.danica.com/flytier/jking/jking.htm:dd4a4]http://www.danica.com/flytier/jking/jking.htm[/url:dd4a4]

Better late than never: You can use deer hair for ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. Try some DHE's, or some muddlers etc.: it's a good skill to have. Moose is good for tails on adams' and other dry flies
