Thread: Trouble with floss

    Default Trouble with floss

Most times when I use floss in my tying I have a problem with the strands separating. Anyone have a solution for this?

Take your bodkin, angle it and let it touch the shank of the hook. Let the next turn of floss roll off the bodkin onto the hook shank. That puts the strands together again. Kinda hard to explain, but maybe you get the gist of it?

Try moistening the floss with a bit of water. Keep a small dish of water next to the vise. Periodically dip your thumb and forefinger into the water, then stroke the floss a few times- just enough to moisten, not saturate, it. It'll behave.

You can also try putting the floss spool into a thread bobbin. Makes it easier to control, but takes a good bobbin, like a ceramic, or the tip will abrade the floss.

You may want to check out UTC 140 thread. It has the same properties as floss, but is MUCH easier to work with.

I always use a bobbin. Twisting in a clockwise direction tightens the floss and will add bulk. Counterclockwise will allow a flatter application. I hope this helps.
