Just a few thoughts on this one.

Remember this is a 'one' fly contest. You have to fish with the same 'fly' all day, you can't replace it with a duplicate of the same patern.

I'd think that a subsurface fly would be a bit iffy. If you snagged it and lost it, you would be done. It has been won by a sinking fly, though, so maybe the snags aren't that bad.

A high floating fly that is easy to see and retrieve if you get it hung in a tree or brush would be handy.

It would also need to be a very durable fly, one without things that are easily cut or damaged by a trouts teeth.

Seems the last article I read on this showed that the contestants relied pretty heavily on foam bodied terrestials, bushy dries, and snag resistant subsurface flies (some used light wire hooks that would bend so they could retrieve snagged flies).

Sounds like a fun way to spend a day.

Good Luck!
