    PT,

No blue grouse skins as of Saturday (I lucked out; a friend in Three Forks is going to get some for me this bird season). All my Firehole trout were caught on a 25 yr old Sage 490 RPL and a Tioga 4 reel; an oldie but a goodie, I wouldn't trade that rod for anything.

    Regards,
    Scott

What are you guys using blue grouse skins for? I've got one and never found much use for it.

Soft hackles; big softhackles (probable some cool jinglers, too).

I use big soft hackle feathers for patterns that I tie for Eastern High Sierra lakes...like Scott said Big flies #4 - #8...many are tied "Cruncher" style...

My issue is that the blue grouse I've got is just bland. I tie some big soft hackles (or put big soft hackles as collars on bugger patterns), but just much prefer ruffed or sharptail grouse, hen pheasant, or one of the fancy Whiting hens.

I've found that fish like the more muted feathers, too, like chuckar; if they're good with it, who am I to argue?
