Tried it for a season, and while I'm sure it works for Jim, it was only a so-so performer for me, same as have most caddis nymph patterns I've tried. You could grease it and fish it shallow, but it really is a subsurface pattern.
Never quite understood why caddis nymphs patterns (larva or pupa), which should represent a larger food source than mayflies in a majority of the waters I fish (tailwaters), never quite work as well. I have a bunch of reliable mayfly nymphs, but very few correspondingly productive caddis patterns, other than generic attractors like the GBHE or Prince.
