Thread: Lunchtime Catfish

    Default Lunchtime Catfish

Hoped for carp (how often do you hear someone admit that?) during lunch today...but caught Channel Catfish instead.
Caught 3, plus some bluegills and Hybrid Sunfish.

All fish were caught on a John Montana's Hybrid Carp Fly.

Pretty cool ! i got 7 cats yesterday w/ some bass and a couple crappie. Of coarse i did not do it over a lunch hour at an easily accessible pond. i drove for an hour and fished out of my kayak for four hours. i enjoyed it but i am still envious. Congrats

Well, we can envy each other, then. Fishing for 4 hours from a kayak sounds like a good time to me!
What fly patterns did your catfish fall for?

It is a clear lake white dominates especially for bass and crappie, and the catfish don't seem to mind. i was throwing 2 size 8 white bunny leeches with some flash. I fish the top unweighted and 2.5 feet away the weighted point fly . This years young bait fish are still pretty small so i fish smaller flies through summer. No doubles yesterday but three of the cats and 1 bass took the top fly. last week on another clear lake i got 3 doubles on a popper on the dropper and a yellow bead chain Clouser on the point. 2 huge green sunfish ,1 bass 1 red ear, 2 bass

THAT would be an interesting battle!

As you can see...the catfish in this pond I've been fishing are all about the same size. They seem to be 17" (+/- 2"). Excited to catch these again when they grow to 24"+.

A buddy and I were out for a couple hours on Saturday; I caught 3-4 large mouths of 12" or so, one really nice bass that slipped the hook just as it was getting interesting, and one nice cat that slipped it just as I was getting him close enough to unhook him. My buddy was spinning and got skunked; not that I wanted that to happen, but....

Targeting carp, I am thankful to have avoided a "skunk" (had one carp on that got tangled on something and broke my tippet) during lunch by catching this catfish today.
